I remember the first time I ever found a fossil. I was playing in a rock pit in my backyard, searching for interesting looking stones, and I came upon a rock that looked like it had an insect smashed on it. Looking closer, I noticed that the insect wasn't smashed at all. It was part of the rock. The ridges on the back had me thinking that I found a beetle embedded in a rock. Curious to know more, I took it inside and showed it to my father. He told me it was a fossil, and he explained how fossils formed to the best of his knowledge. I went to the library and checked out a book on fossils, hoping to find my specimen in its pages. There was my bug in another rock; they called it a trilobite. Compared to the picture in the book, my fossil was much smaller and lacked a few key features. I scored a partial trilobite. Fossil fever set in. I began my quest for a complete trilobite, which led me down the path to fossil collecting.

You could probably tell a similar story. Maybe you found a chunk of petrified wood and fell in love with its iridescence. Collecting fossils is a great hobby for the whole family. Though it's best to go dig up your own, I've decided to help you dig up some fine specimens online at Fossil Index.
